| Say My Name (October 6, 2011) | |||
Press release: Despite the advances we have made in New York for the LGBT community, parts of this country still harbor a resentment against such individuals and freely allow discrimination against them. "Say My Name" is a benefit show being held because of such prejudices. Aaron Haro, a transgendered male, was recently fired from his new job. When pressing his employer as to why he was released, he was told that "the company hadn't interviewed 'Aaron', but rather [his] legal female name, and that [he] was ‘switching things around’ on them and had presented [himself] as 'someone [he's] not'." It made no difference to his employer that his skills, experience, qualifications, and personality were the same, regardless of his gender identity. This benefit is to raise awareness that, in Florida and 37 other states in the US, there exist no employment protections for transgender individuals. Proceeds from this event will be sent to Aaron and his partner to legally change their names and have their gender recognized. | |||
